6 Ways to Move Past Your Creative Blocks

And this blog post came out of the fact that I myself, am having a total creative block and am looking at ways to overcome it. It happens to the best of us. We have to learn to continue on with blogging even when the creative process is blocked.

That can be a hard thing to do. I used to only write when I was emotional. That was when words would just flow out of me. I didn’t have to think of what to write. It was just coming out of me like a rush of water. But that is not a consistent way to get writing done. I will not always be in an emotional state that high. I needed to learn how to write when I was feeling neutral or content. If I didn’t, I was going to lose my blog and my motivation to blog very fast.

BEING A CREATIVE PERSON DOESN’T MEAN YOU DON’T HAVE WRITER’S BLOCK

I consider myself a creative person. I have been since I was little. Writing poetry, blog writing, book writing. I mean, writing, is and always has been my creative outlet. There were years that I gave it up. The years when I could have created some beautiful pieces considering the emotional turmoil I was in but I was trying to erase who I was.

Tips to help you move past your creative blocks.
Tips to help you move past your creative blocks.

I try and blog 6 times a week. That is up from the 3 times a week that I was doing. Currently, I am averaging between 4-5 times a week but truly want to hit that 6 blog posts a week this month consistently. That will not be easy. Not only for the time factors that will need to be addressed but for the fact that it will be 6 unique blog posts per week. That means in the month of June I will have written 26 blog posts in 1 month. That is a lot of writing.

Here are the ways that I will be using and that I have used in the past to move beyond the blocks.

MOVING PAST YOUR CREATIVE BLOCKS

Head to Pinterest. I absolutely love Pinterest and it is full of uplifting, beautiful, and inspiring photos and articles. This is the point where I just scroll. I just look for images that are going to fill me with inspiration. Now I know that as a blogger and possibly a business owner, you are supposed to create more than consume but sometimes we all need a break from creating. I love that Pinterest fuels my creativity. It brings all of these beautiful pieces into 1 platform. You can either look up a specific thing or you can just scroll through your feed. Either way will work. Maybe a combination of each.

Sign up for a free email course. One of my favourite courses that truly ramped up my creativity was through Melyssa Griffin. I can’t remember the name of it but she spoke about creating a course as a way to optimize your blog. She gave tips to creating your own course and I walked away with so much inspiration and a page full of ideas to help me create. Pinterest is a great way to find free email courses from other businesses. Have fun and learn something new.

Watch a documentary. I love doing this as a way to unblock my creativity. Whether it is a documentary about a topic close to your heart or just an uplifting documentary, this is a surefire way to reignite your passion. A few of my favourite documentaries to watch are….

The Fear of 13

Fyre

Miss Representation

The Keepers

The Staircase (I think this can be classified as a documentary)

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez

Tony Robbins: I’m Not Your Guru

From One Second to the Next

Evil Genius

Unbelievable

The Hunting Ground

Read a book. The best way to become a great writer besides writing is to read. Read books of all genres. This is a great way to spark creativity. It can be as simple as a line from a book that gives you the inspiration to write a great blog post. That has happened to me plenty of times. Do you have any favourite books?

Meditate. This is by far one of the best ways that I can get past the creative blocks. It seems like the second I slow my mind down, I get an idea. I now have started to keep a journal near me and a pen in my hand so that I can jot down what comes to me while I meditate. You can use a guided meditation or you can do a silent meditation. I do both every day.

Put the pen or computer away and play with your kids. Sometimes it comes down to the fact that you are just thinking too hard on the subject you are trying to write about. Take a step back and play. This gives your creativity to another outlet and will help with the outlet that you are struggling with. Play and have fun.

I hope that these 6 ways will help you to turn your creative block into another stepping stone to enhance your knowledge and growth. There are many other ways to unblock yourself. Do you have a specific way that works for you? I’d love for you to share it in the comments.
